Bearing Selection

Bearing selection is a complex process that can be simplified by asking five key questions:

  1. Shaft Size
    1. What is the shaft size at each bearing location?
    2. Is the bearing on a stepped shaft? (A stepped shaft will require modifications to the housing and seals.)

  2. Speed
    1. What is the shaft speed at the bearing location?
    2. If belt driven, what is the motor speed and the sheave diameters?
    3. If direct drive through a reducer, what is the motor speed and the reduction ratio?

  3. Loads
    1. What is the radial load that the bearing will be required to support?
    2. What is the axial load that the fixed bearing will be required to support? (The information needed to calculate these loads can be found on Bearing Selection Data Sheets.)

  4. Environment
    1. Are the bearings subject to a wet environment?
    2. What is the shaft temperature at the bearings?
    3. What is the ambient temperature around the bearings?
    4. Are the bearings subject to any contamination? If so, what kind?

  5. Current Bearing Life
    1. How long do the existing bearings last?
    2. What bearing life would you be happy with?

The process of selecting both CRB and TRB bearings is explained in the adjacent tabs.
